And I’m off!
Today is day one of my 4,200-mile ride across America. What is it going to be like to live on/off a bicycle for three months? I have no idea, but I am excited to find out.

I can’t wait to get out there and talk to people about how important international development is. Already, I’ve been getting such great support for the tour — with luck and some hard work, we’ll be able to send a clear message to Congress about how important it is that international development gets funded.
In a little over a week, I will be in Phoenix, AZ, where I hope to meet with a member of Congress or two and discuss how international development keeps America strong and makes the world a safer place. To get there, I will cross out of California, passing through the Cleveland National Forest and the Anza-Borrego Desert, an expansive arid landscape where American Indian tribes like the Cupeño and Kumeyaay lived for thousands of years. I have it a little easier with a bicycle and a GPS system, but I would like to think that my experience crossing the desert will have something in common with those who did it centuries before me. At the very least, I am looking forward to some spectacular stargazing.
